Dealing With Our Debt!

DEALING WITH OUR DEBT

2 Kings 4:1-7

INTRODUCTION: A bondman was a slave or a servant to the creditor until the debt of a non- paying debtor was paid off. Times were a little different back then. Today if we don’t pay our debt it may be bad for your FICA score and increase the interest on more debt, or you might even have to declare bankruptcy. But no one will come along and make your children slaves because you did not pay your debt. But this was the case in that time in history.

I. PAY THY DEBT!

The prophet Elisha asked the woman a question that was very common in the Bible: “What hast thou?” That is the same question asked in Matthew 14:14-21 and in Matthew 15:30-39. So many Christians pride themselves on the fact that all their debts are paid and they do not owe anyone anything. But as good as it is to be out of financial debt we all still have spiritual debts. 2 Kings 4:7

II.      THREE DEBTS EVERY CHRISTIAN OWES!

  1.   WE OWE THE UNSAVED! Romans 1:14-17.

2.   WE OWE THE HOLY SPIRIT! Romans 8:10-16; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

  3.   WE OWE THE DEBT OF LOVE TO EVERYONE! Romans 13:7-10.

III.     FIVE WORDS TO HELP US PAY OUR DEBT!

1.  DESPERATION! 2 Kings 4:1. We find here both a death of the man who took out the loan and the debt.                                     Jeremiah 29:11-13

2.  EXAMINATION! 2 Kings 4:2. How can I help you? What do you have? What are your spiritual needs? Do you even think you have any spiritual needs? 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Peter 1:3-4; John 17:17; Colossians 2:10; Philippians 4:19.

3.  PREPARATION! 2 Kings 4:3; Luke 6:38; Joshua 3:5.

  4.  COOPERATION! 2 Kings 4:4

5.  LIBERATION! 2 Kings 4:5-7; Psalm 81:10
